Trump announces additional 50% duties on specified Canadian dairy, alcoholic-beverage, and motor-vehicle products

POLICY RECORD — 50% SECTION 338 DUTIES TOOK EFFECT AUGUST 22 AFTER TALKS FAILED; CANADA ANNOUNCED DOLLAR-FOR-DOLLAR RETALIATION

The July 20 White House proclamations announced additional 50% duties on specified Canadian products. After a three-day pause for negotiations, the United States allowed the duties to take effect just after midnight on August 22 on roughly $20 billion of Canadian goods. Canada suspended the talks and announced dollar-for-dollar retaliation. The new duties therefore moved from proposed/paused policy to implemented policy.
